Hey, did you know you might have money waiting for you? It’s worth checking for unclaimed dividends from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). It’s easier than you might think!

First, just head over to the official SEC website. Look around, and you should find something called the ‘Unclaimed Dividends Search Portal’ — click on that.

Now, you’ll see a search box. This is where you type in your first and last name, or if you’re checking for someone else, their name. Hit that ‘Search’ button.

Next, you’ll want to double-check the results. The SEC has a list of shares linked to names, and you can find that here: https://sec.gov.ng/non-mandated/. Take a peek at that list to see if your name pops up.

Finally, and this is important, for each company where you see shares listed, write down the registrar’s name. You’ll need that information later.

It’s a bit of a treasure hunt, but you never know what you might find.

For most registrars — you can fill out the necessary details online and submit to have your dividends paid directly into your account. For some others, you did need to fill out the paper form to get your dividends. Head on to the GumRoad site to download a free template if you are sending the paper form.

They requirements are (it may be more than this for some registrars — Recent Passport Photograph, Means of Identification (International Passport, Drivers License, Voters Card, etc), and lastly Signature.
